After School Tutoring Program
The After School Tutoring program serves children ages 6 to 16 that are experiencing difficulties at school. The children are matched with a volunteer tutor who assists them with a variety of educational subjects, the focus being primarily reading and math. This program was developed in response to recurring concerns expressed by parents, program staff and local teachers. This program is free of charge giving access to parents who could not otherwise afford this type of assistance for their children. Tutors are recruited from the local community and receive supervision and training from the After School Tutoring Program Worker, a part-time position at St. Christopher House. Tutors must undergo a Police Reference Check, as must all staff and volunteers in our children and youth programs. Currently 35 children are paired with almost 30 volunteers in this program. The demand for this program exceeds our ability to respond to the need and we currently have a waiting list of about 20 children. The difficulty we encounter is in obtaining enough volunteer tutors for the program. Through one-on-one tutoring, games, activities and academic materials, we are fortunate to make a difference in the lives of the children we work with. Children begin to feel better about themselves and their abilities that lead them to become more successful in their classroom environment. Referrals and linkages are often made to our other children's programs such as the Summer Day Camp.
