Community Kitchen & Positive Parenting Workshops
The Community Kitchen happens on the last Wednesday of every month from 10:00am to 2:00pm. The participants come from different communities within the Parkdale area (Mandarin, Vietnamese, Tamil, Spanish and Tibetan). The participants come together to socialize and share their life experiences, different cultures as well as enhancing their parenting skills. While one group does the cooking the other group participates in a Positive Parenting Workshop which typically attracts around 25 women and 25 children aged 0 to 6 years old. Childcare is available.
The main goals of the workshops are to reduce isolation of marginalized families, build and increase linkages among families and provide information while raising awareness of parenting issues. These goals are realized through the organization of workshops, informal training sessions and the preparation and cooking of meals together. Group discussions cover topics such as parenthood, child abuse, substance abuse, stress management, safety tips, women's health, healthy relationships, heart-attack risk factors, guidelines for healthy eating and other parenting issues.
The Community Kitchen and Parenting Workshops takes place in the basement of
