Larry Lewis

Born in a small town in rural New Hamphsire in the USA Larry has lived in Canada for more than 25 years.  After having received degrees from Bard College and the Paris Conservatory Larry found himself in New York City facing the reality that his degrees and a dollar would get him a cup of coffee.  Larry began giving the odd classical recital while he bagan working for Dance and Theatre companie and studying jazz.  This led him to form his own Puppet Theatre Company, The Consort, which Larry performed with for 10 years performing musical shows that he had created himself.

When Larry arrived in Canada he continued working in Theatre but his involvement in jazz absorbed most of his time.  The culmination of Larry's career in jazz was the group Delawareness.  They were a trio who recorded a cd, performed in several Canadian Jazz Festivals but then broke up, primarily because of geographical reasons.  Through jazz Larry became heavily involved in improvisation which remains as the backbone of Larry's musical life today.  At this point Larry also began writing plays in earnest, primarily for the Clay and Paper Theatre Company.  The last of these plays, The One Eyed Poet of Portugal, was performed in Toronto in the summer of 2006 for a six week run in Dufferin Grove Park.

During this period of writing plays Larry continued to perform and became interested in Cuban music.  Larry subsequently went to Cuba to study and formed a salsa group upon his return to Toronto called Poquito Grande.  Then, by coincidence Larry became involved in Fado, the music most emblematic of Portugal and he continues to play Fado today.  In playing Fado Larry met several Brasilians and Portugese who played Brasilian music and became heavily involved with Brasilian music.  With Pedro Joel, Larry formed a group called Paraiso Cruel.  Larry also performs with several other World Music groups including Masaisai, a group from Zimbabwe and Los Atrevidos with singer Max Metrault.

During all of this time Larry has been teaching, the majority of which has been at St. Chris Music School.  Both the style and and the content of Larry's teaching are the result of his musical explorations.  Different cultures provide different music but cultures also teach music differently.  The various teaching styles Larry has experiences and observed along the way have inflicted upon his students at St. Chris and Larry hopes that this will continue to be the case well into the future.
