We have to be conscious of removing barriers.
It’s got to be user friendly and accessible to all staff at all
sites.

We focused a lot on processes like volunteering.
We saw the idea that you can fill out a downloadable template or
form on the internet. We
looked at internal processes and all the types of processes that St.
Christopher House needs to look at. There
are lots, like donations, community at large, and volunteers. It was
obvious that it all has to be clear and organized.

Rather than developing a generic solution for all people, it’s a customized environment geared for a specific person. What works for one person or group doesn’t work for everyone its essential to have a customized environment for the person who is learning. We have to find the starting point for the learning. |

In order to have successful e learning, a site has to be
focused, manageable and targeted. Sometimes
the range of information is overwhelming.

Not all websites are accessible or accurate.

We had a real revelation that the information on a web site
is not necessarily true or accurate. The level of detail context and language and the amount of
information had to be close to right on, or else the information wasn’t
that useful. A lot of the
time, we didn’t understand the language and that also made it not
useful.

Universities and colleges are putting whole courses online,
but what we have to remember is, they have to be student centred, not
teacher centred.

All the sites we went to, you had to be a member, it was a
bit frustrsting. You have to find a balance, because its not going to be right
for everyone, and not everyone will feel included, we just have to do our
best.

One the sites we looked at, we found a lack of focus and that
created a lack of engagement on our part.

With web logs, people are going in and writing their diaries- their opinions
and thoughts. It seemed to be
a kind of therapy. We debated whether it was isolating or community
building. Sometimes people can’t reach out, and if this is the only way
they can, then it may be community building.

There didn’t seem to be a lot of factual info. We asked
whether online relationships are real. And if an organization is trying to work
with a community are those relationships real?

Shelley As you go into your next exercise I want to present you with another axiom that we use here in the ASE. “You can’t get there from here, but you can get here from there.” It’s very challenging to figure out how to create a successful project from where we are today. There are a lot of challenges and obstacles. It is a lot easier to pick a point in time and look at it in the future state rather than the current state. We can choose a point in time when you have achieved great success and look back and determine what it was that got you to that state. What were the steps that you took to create that success? |
