Adult Literacy Tutor
The Adult Literacy Program helps English-speaking people in the west part of Toronto learn to read, write and do math at a basic level. We are looking for individuals who are able to tutor mathematics at a basic or intermediate level, explaining math concepts such as measurement, decimals, long division, fractions and basic geometry.
Volunteer Duties:
· To work one-to-one with a learner or small group to improve their literacy skills
· To keep a journal/record of learning
Skills Required:
· Should live or work within the St. Christopher House catchment area - St. Clair to the
· Must have an interest in Literacy and adult education
· Must have an ability to teach and explain math concepts clearly, covering curriculum such as measurement, long division, fractions and basic geometry
· Must have strong spoken English skills
· Must be friendly, open, reliable, patient, non-judgemental and non-discriminating
Orientation & Training:
· Questionnaire and initial interview with program staff
· Staff provides 15 hour tutor training sessions, including an anti-discrimination training (3 times per year - spring fall winter), that is mandatory for tutors
· On-going support provided by staff
· On-going training workshop opportunities throughout the year
Program Time & Location:
· Tutors and learners meet at St. Christopher House,
· We are looking for people who are available Mon-Friday in the afternoons or evenings
· Wheelchair accessible with washroom facilities
Volunteer Commitment:
· Once a week for 3 hours, a 2-hour tutoring session and approximately 1 hour of preparation (at any time)
· One year to ensure continuity in the relationship
