After School Volunteer Tutor – Parkdale Vietnamese Family Support

St Christopher House’s Parkdale Focus Program runs an After School Tutoring Program specifically for Vietnamese students in Parkdale, who are having difficulties doing well in school. The program aims to help students in grades 1-12 in a variety of school subjects ranging from: English, Math and Science. Children and youth are referred to the program from parents and local schools based on their degree of need for extra-curricular support.

Volunteer Duties:

• To work both with small groups and one-to-one with a child/ youth on various scholastic areas
• To identify goals and highlight areas of strength and improvement for the child
• Volunteer tutor will work with the Tutoring Program Supervisor and with recommendations from the child's teacher
• To prepare weekly tutoring lessons for the child based on their needs and goals, which incorporate his/her school curriculum
• To be present and punctual for all scheduled tutoring sessions.

Skills Required:

• Must have advanced knowledge in reading, writing, math and science
• Must have strong English skills both spoken and written and cross-cultural communication skills
• Must have an interest in working with children in an educational environment
• Must be patient, friendly, reliable, non-judgemental and non-discriminating

Orientation &Training:

• Staff provides orientation and tutor training sessions before tutors are matched with child
• On-going support provided by staff

Program Time & Location:

• Tutoring happens at our St. Chris Parkdale Focus location at 1497 Queen St West (at Lansdowne Ave)
• Volunteers are needed to tutor on Mondays (2) and Tuesdays (2) from 5-7pm

Volunteer Commitment:

• Once a week for 2 hours plus preparation time
• 1 year to ensure continuity in the relationship
