Meeting Place Store Volunteer

The Meeting Place is our drop-in program for homeless community members located at Queen and Bathurst, providing supports such as laundry, showers, counseling, advocacy, a community kitchen and First Nations programming. The Meeting Place is a community space that offers safety, security and access to basic needs. The Meeting Place Store operates to sell the arts and crafts made by homeless and low-income community members, and profit made through sales goes back to the artist.  We are looking for volunteers to help out in operating the store, so that store hours can be increased. Volunteers for this program need to be mature, able to work independently and need to be able to handle many duties at any given time. 

Volunteer Duties:

      ·     Greet customers as they come into the store, and answer questions about the Meeting Place program and the products for sale

      ·     Handle financial transactions, taking money and giving out change and keep track of sales

      ·     Keep store clean and tidy and welcoming to all

      ·     Notify staff at least 2 days in advance if not able to attend scheduled day

Requirements:

·         Retail or customer service experience a strong asset

·         Experience and comfort handling cash is necessary

·         Excellent interpersonal skills are necessary

·         Need to be comfortable interacting with homeless community members who come into the store  

·         Ability to work independently, with minimal supervision

Orientation/Training:

      ·     General orientation and support provided by St. Christopher House staff

      ·     Ongoing workshops available

Program Time and Place:

·         The Meeting Place store is located at 588 Queen St West, the corner of Queen and Bathurst

·        We are looking for volunteers who are available to volunteer for 3.5 hours a week, We are looking for volunteers who are available to volunteer for 3.5 hours a week, either on Mondays from 11-2:30pm or 2:30-5pm

Volunteer Commitment:

      ·     Minimum 3 month commitment
