Youth HOST Program Creative Group
And one-on-one Mentor and Facilitator
The Youth HOST Program at St. Christopher House provides a safe space for youth ages 13-16 to socialize, talk about issues affecting their lives, learn from each other and have fun. We are looking for creative volunteers who have an expertise or a specific talent that they could mentor a group or individual immigrant, refugee, or newcomer youth in a workshop. We are open to different workshop possibilities, but some examples could be teaching: fashion design, visual art, graffiti arts, dancing, drumming, life skills, Canadian customs, information about the Canadian society, vocational orientation, intergenerational issues, etc... Openness to different culture and orientation in cross-cultural communication from an anti-oppression approach is required.
Volunteer Duties:
· To plan and facilitate a creative workshops for youth
· To provide mentorship either for small groups or one-on-one
· To work as a member of a caring, committed and creative team and of staff and volunteers
Skills Required:
· Must be comfortable working with youth
· Ability to perform group facilitation and/or teaching is a strong asset (support may be provided)
· Must have strong interpersonal skills, lots of enthusiasm and energy to inspire
· Must be patient, friendly, reliable, flexible, non-judgemental and non-discriminating
Orientation &Training:
· Program Coordinator and program staff provides orientation and training
· On-going support provided by staff
Program Time & Location:
Flexible hours and different locations within our catchment area
Volunteer Commitment:
Negotiable, however, we would prefer 6 months commitment period.
