Meals-on-Wheels Driver

 

The volunteer driver uses his/her own vehicle to deliver meals.  A detailed map is supplied of the route to be covered, with all stops clearly marked.  A "MEALS ON WHEELS " sign is used on the windshield to alert other motorists that a delivery is in progress.  The driver may assist the "runner" deliver meals when the route includes an apartment.

Volunteer Duties & Responsibilities:
· Friendly smile
· Arrive at the Meals on Wheel lounge by 10:30 am
· Review the route map
· Meet the runner
· Drive the route
· Assist runner with any client information, and meal delivery if able
· Inform the Meals on Wheels staff at least three days in advance if unable to drive
· Participation in volunteer job related training workshops

Skills Required:
· Must enjoy working with people
· Must have an interest in seniors and disabled persons' issues
· Must be friendly, reliable, patient, non-judgemental and non-discriminating

Orientation, Training and Benefits:
· Staff provides orientation and training before volunteers are placed in the program
· On-going support provided by staff
· On-going training workshop opportunities and get-togethers provided throughout the year
· Mileage stipend provided

Program Time:
· 7 days a week: 11:00 am - 1:00 pm - open on all Statutory Holidays

Volunteer Commitment:
· May volunteer once a week or once a month; flexible according to volunteer's schedule
· Minimum of 6 months or more
