St. Christopher House has lots of fun and challenging opportunities for new volunteers to get involved. You can work with people from all walks of life, children, adults or seniors, and help out with a wide range of activities - from delivering meals to seniors in their homes, helping adults with basic literacy needs, facilitating groups, one to one tutoring, and much more!

Income Tax Preparation Assistant
 
The Financial Advocacy and Problem Solving Program at St. Christopher House helps low – income people with tax returns throughout the year and holds free Income Tax Clinics during the tax season. Program participants include newcomers, homeless individuals, youth and seniors who reside in our catchment area. FAPS also provides education and public awareness to community members regarding the benefits of completing and filing returns. Volunteers assist individuals and families in completing income tax returns one to one, by appointment and drop-ins.
 
Volunteer Duties & Responsibilities:
·         Complete income tax returns for individuals that live in the St. Christopher House catchment area
·         Assist the staff in educating public about the benefits of doing income tax returns every year.
·         Ability to work independently within a team environment
  • Maintain confidentiality
  • Must be punctual and reliable
·         Participation in volunteer job related training workshops and meetings
·         Be welcoming, friendly and open-minded
 
Skills Required:
·         Must have experience in basic income tax preparation
·         Confident in using the computer
·         Good communication skills
·         Understand  the challenges experienced by low-income individuals
·         Friendly, reliable, responsible, non-judgemental and non-discriminating
·         Second language is an asset, especially Hungarian, Portuguese, Urdu, Mandarin, Tamil,  Vietnamese, Spanish
·         Flexible and willing to learn
 
Orientation, Training and Benefits:
·         Staff and the Canada Revenue Agency will provide orientation and training before volunteers are placed in the program – training will be during weekday hours. Approximately training is 15 hours
·        On-going support provided by staff
 
Program Time and Location:
·         Training will be held in January and February and Income Tax Clinics will be from March 1 to April 30.
·         Income Tax Clinics will be scheduled at different locations in the catchment area of St. Christopher House.
 
Volunteer Commitment:
·         15 hours for training
·         3 hours per week, minimum, from March 1 to April 30 between the hours of 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. (9 - 12pm for our CFS program as well)
