For the past 20 years, Arts for Children (www.artsforchildren.org) and our Meals-on-Wheels program have engaged in a unique intergenerational partnership where children connect with seniors in a meaningful way. Through their Holiday Reflections Community Sharing project, children created art that reflected their memories of the holidays. Intent on bridging the generational gap between seniors and children, as well as broadening the children’s understanding of those less fortunate in their community. This December 18, 2007, children from Arts for Children accompanied our Meals-on-Wheels driver to hand deliver their paintings along with the meals, to seniors in our community. “The overall experience of creating artwork for the purpose of social change promotes the personal and creative growth of the children making the art, and engages them in meaningful artistic experiences that support community investment,” explains Julie Frost, Artistic Director for Arts for Children, who designed and organized the program. “It also gives each elderly person the chance to celebrate the holiday by receiving this special creative gift from a child living in the surrounding community.”
