Volunteer Testimonial: Joan Eddy

Joan Eddy Meals on Wheels volunteer

Joan Eddy is one of the Meals on Wheels at St. Chris House's longest serving volunteers. In her own words, here's why she's kept with the program for so long.

In 1982 I responded to a radio appeal for volunteers to deliver Meals on Wheels at SCH.  Twenty-four years later I am still delivering meals and enjoying being a part of the large body of caring volunteers and staff who provide services to our community.

I have always admired SCH's guiding principles of enabling the less advantaged.  Personally it has given me great satisfaction to help provide meals for people who need them.  While my five children were growing up, keeping them fed was a big part of my responsibilities.  Now I can provide meals for our clients and I don't even have to cook them!

Being a driver means that I often have different and very interesting runners working with me.  Over the years these runners ranged in age from teenagers to eighty-year olds, and they have come from all walks of life, and from all corners of the earth.  I am particularly pleased that four of my grandchildren have also chosen to deliver Meals on Wheels at various times, and two grandsons completed their whole 40 hour volunteer requirement for their high school diploma by delivering meals.  I know they would join with me in endorsing the delivery of meals as a very satisfying form of volunteerism.
