CAREGIVER SUPPORT

Caregivers represent the main source of support for those individuals who can no longer live independently and they face extraordinary challenges in their day-to-day effort. This responsibility can take a physical and psychological toll and caregivers often feel isolated and that no one understands. We offer several caregiver support programs aimed at reducing the stress of caring for frail elderly and disabled people and to address the growing needs of caregivers who require access to information, education and training related to health and the opportunity of finding mutual help and support from other caregivers.

These services include:

  • Counseling – individual or family

  • Caregiver Training/Information sessions – topics include Powers of Attorney, placement, managing difficult behaviours, information on stroke and cognitive impairment and community resources etc.

  • Support groups -  are offered in Portuguese and Cantonese and provide caregivers with the opportunity to acquire new skills, to give and receive support and a chance to better understand their own needs and feelings so as to improve their psychological well-being and improve their relationship with the person they are caring for.

  • Respite care – staff provides relief to caregivers by providing periodic, short-term care in the home.  This enables the caregiver to attend to personal affairs.  A fee is charged for this service.  Subsidies available.

  • Adult Day Services –   A social and recreational program provided in a safe and caring environment to older adults with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of cognitive impairment and for those who are frail, socially isolated and/or physically disabled.  Professional, multilingual staff provide a wide range of activities to meet the needs of each individual.  Fee for service. Subsidies available.
